Developing an indicator of productive potential to assess land use suitability in New Zealand

The Land Use Suitability (LUS) concept informs decision-making by stakeholders with information about the economic and environmental consequences of land use choices. LUS is composed three indicators describing inherent productive economichttps://mail.niwa.co.nz/owa/- _msocom_1 potential parcels (productive potential), contribution a parcel to lose contaminants relative other (relative contribution), load lost compared that ensures objectives are met (pressure). This paper outlines an improved indicator (PP). We outline four layers comprise PP for parcel: (1) Feasibility, which defines whether productivity quality crop enough allow be undertaken; (2) Yield, amount product or can grown; (3) Economic returns, given yield requirements parcel; (4) Importance, combines returns probability being undertaken. These combined into single value use. expressed continuously categorically mapped at national scale. When Relative Contribution Pressure in system, it allows identification areas most suitable intensification providing direct comparison outcomes.
